EPISODE 1 : OBLIGATORY JEJU ISLAND JOURNEY

Our drama began in high school. Brought together by our mutual, nerdy love of anime plus a dramatic haircut, during our 12 years together we slowly progressed (devolved?) into watching live-action South Korean dramas, or K-dramas. Eventually, our interest in Asian culture led us to take the leap and move abroad for an international teaching job for Hannah, and an enviable new career in house husband-ry for Ben. As it is “a truth universally acknowledged” that all K-dramas must have an episode on South Korea’s vacation island, the latest installment of our G-drama (Greaves drama) unfolds here on beautiful Jeju, in the midst of the East China Sea…

EPISODE 12: THE BALL THAT CAN AND WILL BE VOLLEYED: Jeju Furey 2013

First, a note: if you haven't seen the pics from our trip to Seoul yet, make sure to scroll down below this post for some cat-cafes and palaces!

So, considering there's snow on the ground in some places of Jeju now, these pictures are from a while back... the middle of October, to be exact. Since coming to Jeju, we have become major players of what our friend Jon would call sportsball: there's nothing else to do, hence we participate in almost every sporting event at the school possible. ^^

Ben's been playing futbol with our school's staff and people from the British school nearby, while I've been doing Zumba and swimming. We've both been playing volleyball, which has been an awesome time, and led us to getting convinced to join this volleyball tournament in October.

It was during our anniversary weekend, so we weren't convinced at first, but it turned out to be one of the most fun things we've done on Jeju so far. The weather was perfect, Hamdeok Beach was gorgeous (and still warm enough to swim!), and, as you can see, the volleyball was both intense and awesome.

Naturally, Ben spent about 75% of the game diving for the ball like a maniac/superhero.

Our awesome team, the Consonants (or Cnsnnts)! As we all had names starting with consonants, each one of us wore the first letter of our name in Korean on the front of our shirts, and in English on the back of our shirts. Like our shorts? ...Yeah, they're the free shirts we got in the tournament. Guess whose idea it was to wear them like that?

Michael, Madi, Daisy, Dan, and us!

Serve it up, boy!

Refereeing and enjoying the beach.

This is what intimidation looks like.

Soooo many volleyball games going on at once!

Ben is so awesome that he filled in for other teams that didn't have players during the tournament twice. Sweet guy. ^^

Diving for the ball?

Whatever's over there is more interesting than looking at you/the camera.

Again, Ben diving all the time.

We started in the lowest bracket, and ended up being moved up a bracket by the end of the tournament. Not too shabby.

This led to us playing in the Staff vs. Students Volleyball game a few weeks later. Women staff won against the HS girls, woo woo!

Ben played in his usual sacrifice-your-body-for-the-game style against the boys' team. Notice that he's burned through his knee pads and his knees after diving for a ball... Needless to say, male staff crushed the boys' A team.

Volleyball = fun times!
