EPISODE 1 : OBLIGATORY JEJU ISLAND JOURNEY

Our drama began in high school. Brought together by our mutual, nerdy love of anime plus a dramatic haircut, during our 12 years together we slowly progressed (devolved?) into watching live-action South Korean dramas, or K-dramas. Eventually, our interest in Asian culture led us to take the leap and move abroad for an international teaching job for Hannah, and an enviable new career in house husband-ry for Ben. As it is “a truth universally acknowledged” that all K-dramas must have an episode on South Korea’s vacation island, the latest installment of our G-drama (Greaves drama) unfolds here on beautiful Jeju, in the midst of the East China Sea…

EPISODE 14: SUBMARINES, MILITARY BASES AND....GOATS? Hello, Songaksan.

ust some of the sights you'll see when you visit Songaksan, one of our coastal volcano mountains.
Strangely though, whenever I'm there, I always feel like Hannah and I are on a Scottish moor. Jeju never stops being full of visual surprises.

Hannah wanted to do this walk. I said it was too windy and cold. The tall grass agreed.
Hannah did not. Hence the photos.

Don't you dare fall during the submarine tour; that is sure to hurt business.

Overlooking the ocean, and then... oh, hello, goat clinging to the tenuous countryside!

You've got square eye. Go to the nurse's office.

Where Hannah sends me when she's mad at me. It's rather cold and drowndy.

I love how the water made semi-circle frequency lines off the crag.

FLAME GRASS

IT BURNS

Wait a sec. What's that?

FLAME BIRDS.

Also a lost cactus.

Oh. Did I startle you? Neeeeeee (Korean for yes).

Bonus photo of when the 3 house husbands hiked one of the peaks on Mount Hallasan (the one we can see from our window - see last post).
I was not dressed appropriately.

EPISODE 13: BIG FRUIT. SMALL TREE.

It started pretty, and it ended pretty unless you look at the pictures with Ben in them. Then, we issue a formal apology to your poor, poor eyes. (Hmm, can you tell who wrote that?)

First, the view from our window (with a great camera): snow-capped Mt. Hallasan, the tallest mountain in South Korea!

Now, our late-November visit to the Spirited Garden, supposedly the world's only outdoor bonsai garden? Bonsais everywhere, along with signs with "life lessons" gained from cultivating bonsai from the garden's founder.

It's so fall-ish here! Yay!

Want to hug all the fall...

Hmm, insert Ben on the swing next to me in your head.

Yes, a dolhareubang Santa in a park filled with Buddhist musings... Oh Christmas, is there anywhere you won't go?

I don't want this fish to look like it's eating my head!

According to the sign, some people call the quince "a disgrace among fruits." Maybe because you can't just eat a quince, you have to cook it first? Oh quince tree, how do you hold your fruit up?

This pomelo is sooooo big.

Aww, so mini! (As my students would say.)

Note how the rail is made out of human figures? Kind of cool, kind of creepy...

Teapot, yes, short and stout... not so much.

Again, why....?

Lovely Hyeopchae Beach on the western side of Jeju, with Biyangdo Island in the background! The lava rocks in the water make so many beautiful different colors here...

Cigarettes already have your children. Don't give them the beach, too!

To prevent erosion? Not sure what's going on here.

A more debauched way to prevent erosion... This was an impressive pile outside a restaurant close to the beach.

And you thought Jeju wouldn't have enough reggae for you...

This cat is planning to kill for that tuna kimbap.

Another Sunday, another day of fun exploring! Next up: trying on hanbok at our last Korean class of the season!
